Having to be towed because your car has broken down on the side of the road is never fun. However, it does happen and you never know exactly when that might be. When you need to be towed, you want to be sure that you are taking the proper steps to make the situation less stressful and safe. Here's what you should do:

Stay Safe:

The first thing you want to do is be sure that you are safe. Be sure to move your car to the side of the road if you can and stay in the car with the doors locked, especially if you are in a remote location. This will ensure that you are not vulnerable to someone attacking you. If you are not able to move the car to the side of the road, you will want to get yourself off the street and call the police if you do not feel safe. If it's the middle of the day on a busy road, then you can simply stay on the side of the road and wait for the towing service.

Know Who to Call:

If you have roadside assistance included with your insurance company, it's best to call this number. This will save you the most money and any towing company that works with your insurance company is going to be well trusted. If you don't have roadside assistance, call the number on the back of your credit cards to see if that credit card company provides towing services for their customers, which some companies do. There is usually a fee, but it tends to be much lower than just hiring a towing company without any type of coverage. If this is not possible either, try to find a towing company that charges the least amount possible by using the Internet on your phone. 

Describe the Problem:

Once the towing service mechanic arrives to tow your vehicle, they are likely going to ask what went wrong. This is because some of the time a towing mechanic will be able to fix the car, or at least provide you with a tip that can help you fix the issue in the future. Be sure that you are truthful about what went wrong with your vehicle, even if you feel embarrassed that the problem may have been caused by you. 

Tow it to a Shop: 

If you are able to, it's best to tow your vehicle to a local auto repair shop to have it fixed. If you have car insurance, it may provide you enough coverage for you to rent a car. This should help you to continue getting around until your car is repaired. 

By knowing the steps to take when you need towing services, you can be sure that it is done right and you end up saving a great deal of stress during the situation.
