Improving Your Vehicle

When taking a motor home on a camping trip, it is often more convenient to take your car along in case you need to run unexpected errands. This allows you to leave the campsite when needed without having to remove your camper. Many people find it much more convenient to tow their vehicle behind a motor home instead of having someone drive it separately. This can be done safely and legally in a few different ways. 

With a Tow Bar 

Tow bars are designed to attach to your motor home and connect to your car so it can be towed safely. A tow bar consists of the bar and a base plate. The bar is attached to the motor home and the base plate connects to the vehicle that is being towed. There are different styles of tow bar systems and they are often designed for different sizes of cars or trucks.

Using a tow bar to pull your vehicle behind your motor home allows all four wheels of the car to remain on the ground. However, the vehicle may need a special light attachment so that signal lights can be seen when turns are made. It is also possibly to wire the lights for the motor home to the lights on the car so they will be visible at the same time.

With a Towing Dolly 

A tow dolly is a short, two-wheeled trailer that tows a vehicle by holding two of the vehicle's wheels off the ground. The dolly is attached to the motor home with a ball hitch. Then the vehicle can be driven forward onto the dolly ramps so that the two front wheels sit on the dolly and the back wheels remain on the ground. 

The towed vehicle is attached to the dolly securely with either straps or chains. Tow dollies are already equipped with a lighting system that alerts other traffic when needed. Tow dollies are designed to tow a variety of different sizes of vehicles, but should only be used for those that are front-wheel drive.

With a Trailer  

A towing trailer can also be used to transport your vehicle behind a motor home. Trailers carry the entire vehicle while towing so that all four wheels are kept off the ground. Towing trailers can also move in reverse and many are readily equipped with both a light system and brakes.

If you plan on traveling a long distance on your camping trip, you may prefer to use a towing trailer for transporting your vehicle. Since your car will not have any wheels on the ground with this towing method, the extra mileage and wear and tear on your car can be avoided.
